Taxes - The Heritage FoundationTaxes - The Heritage Foundation President Obama has called for a huge tax increase to take effect on January 1, 2011. Instead of reducing spending, he proposes to raise taxes on a wide swath of taxpayers—including small businesses—despite the weak economic recovery. Congressional Democrats stand poised (immediately following the November elections) to endorse the President’s request and threaten to go much further. Proponents of letting the tax cuts expire—which would indeed be a tax hike—have offered a wide array of justifications for this wrongheaded policy. Heritage Foundation fiscal policy expert J. D. Foster wades through the myths and straw arguments to set the record straight. Analysts at The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis (CDA) conducted static and dynamic analyses of the act (H.R. 5029), finding that over the long term, dynamic economic effects would offset much of the cost of the tax relief. In the short term, the act would increase the deficit if it was not coupled with reductions in spending. This means a specific plan for spending cuts is imperative. The CDA analysts detail the economic and fiscal effects of the Economic Freedom Act’s spending and tax cuts. It affects hundreds of thousands of small-business owners across the country—as well as their employees and community residents who benefit from the senior and day care centers, playgrounds, charities, and learning centers that are built or supported by small-business owners. Like water and sunlight in an ecosystem, small businesses provide sustenance essential to building and preserving communities. So high is the death tax that a large portion of heirs to small companies cannot afford to pay it after the business founder dies, and see themselves forced to sell to giant corporations—which have no personal ties to the communities of their new acquisitions, and thus no incentive to commit to local institutions. What does the death tax kill? The best of American life and civil society itself. The death tax is simply antithetical to the core of the American dream. Often, these homeowners were lured by initially low interest rates that provided the illusion of affordability. After a few years, these "teaser" rates reset upward, creating unaffordably high mortgage payments. Not yet—due to a legal quirk, the death tax is scheduled to come back to life in 2011. Studies, statistics, and real life have shown again and again that the businesses and families burdened with the death tax often see themselves forced to cut back on benefits, investments, and employees. The death tax keeps new jobs from being created, hurting not just the affected businesses, but the economy as a whole. Because it is a tax on capital, the death tax destroys as many as 1.5 million jobs that the economy needs as it struggles to recover. Happy Flag Day America |

Happy Flag Day Folks! While this holiday gets little fanfare, it is steeped in a long history of celebration dating back to 1885. The growth of this holiday is one of great national pride and patriotism. Its humble beginnings, as in our founding documents themselves, started as local observations and declarations. The Board of Managers of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolutions moved to have it celebrated in all schools in Philadelphia in 1893. The state of New York began formal celebrations in 1894, and by 1916, it was being celebrated in over half of the states in the nation. It was formally proclaimed as a National Holiday in 1949 by an act of Congress.
Even our President, whom had been ribbed for not following the protocol of placing one's hand over their heart during it’s display in conjunction with our national anthem, managed to squeak out a statement today acknowledging the holiday. In true Obama style, the statement was both hypocritical, out of touch with tradition, and made a point to “change the norm” when such change is not required.

WASHINGTON -- Today is Flag Day, and President Obama says Americans should be proud of Old Glory by flying it wherever possible.
He's made the customary proclamation recognizing Flag Day, but is also extending the observance by declaring the upcoming days as National Flag Week.
The president has ordered flags displayed on all federal buildings during the week and is urging Americans to fly the Star and Stripes at their homes and other suitable places.
Obama is also calling on Americans to observe the period from Flag Day through Independence Day as a celebration of the nation's heritage, and by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at public gatherings. |

In response, I would like to make the following points:
-
May I point out to you that all federal buildings have been required to have the flag on display, and have done so as long as I can remember? In fact, most government offices, like my local BMV has always displayed a photo of the President of the United States in addition to the flag. My BMV however, located in an abandoned over unionized grocery store, which will also be home to a new government sponsored “Community Works Center”, this year, created a full shrine on the wall for the president, compete with multiple Obama photos, Obama dolls, Obama figures, Obama seals and more Obama fan
paraphernalia. Perhaps they built this Obama shrine with funds raised for the sale of their old flag? That might be a problem now.
-
To extend Flag Day to Flag Week is a joke. Most people I know who fly the flag, do so all the time, not just one day a year. To order such a thing is completely redundant, and an insult to those of us whom so strongly believe in our country. Perhaps in the social circles of “Community Organizers” this is not the case, but most people see themselves as citizens of the United States above any trite flavor of the month cause.
-
Obama has called on the reciting of the pledge of Pledge of Allegiance at all public gatherings? Really, you mean like we used to do in school? The same pledge his party has done all they can to remove for it’s use of the phrase “One Nation, under God”. Shocking, considering he has referred to us as a Muslim nation. According to his administrations, organizations such as the local 9/12 chapter that I am part of, are considered to be a “Domestic Terrorists” for meeting and performing such acts.
While Obama's statement should hold value to me, it only enrages me, because as usual, he is not saying what he believes. A disingenuous president is the worst kind. Nothing is scarier then a leader who claims one thing to the populous to sooth them and put them to sleep, while behind closed doors works to do just the opposite. We see this in leaders today, in North Korea, Iran, Russia and Venezuela, and seeing here in the United States does nothing but erode away at the credibility of the office itself. I would have rather he said nothing at all.
Take a moment today and look up at the stars and stripes. Remember that it is still made up of the 13 stripes representing those original colonies. Remember that it still contains 50 stars representing the 50 States that make up this republic. This flag is so unique; it boldly conveys our unique system of government, and way of life. Each of us, together, make up these United States of America, we are not after all just America. Most flags of other nations contain circles and crests of the government, even the United Nations flag is symbolically contained in leaves representing the concept of peace. In our flag, no stripe or star is larger than the other, all are equal, and grant their power to the whole, rather than being ruled by it. This is the message of our flag that should be remembered. Think of this as you place your hand on your heart, in remembrance of all who fought and died for it. Give thanks to them, give thanks to God and pray with me, for this great country, and for each citizen that makes it up. God Bless the America!
